The Luftwaffe in the North African Campaign 1941-1943

Title – The Luftwaffe in the North African Campaign 1941-1943

Authors – Werner Held and Ernst Obermaier

This wide-ranging and detailed photo volume focuses on the Luftwaffe operations in North Africa from 1941-1943.

With well researched, interesting and detailed photos the reader is shown the brutal and hard fought Desert campaign. The authors have clearly described the conditions that the Luftwaffe operated in. They show from the initial victories to the final desperate battles trying to hold off the Allies in Tunisia.

The authors have managed to compile an extensive variety of in flight and ground photos covering transports, bombers, fighters and reconnaissance aircraft with types such as the Messerschmitt Bf 109′s,  Junkers Ju 87′s through to the Messerschmitt Me 323 “Gigant” transport planes. Many of the photos illustrate Luftwaffe personnel operating and relaxing in the combat zone. The coverage extends to famous Luftwaffe pilots like Hans-Joachim Marseille who managed to score 151 aerial victories in the desert campaign.

The book also discusses the lesser known German ground units such as the Fallschirmjager (Paratrooper) and the famous “Hermann Goring” Division which was eliminated in Tunisia during the final battles of 1943.

Werner Held is an author who has focused on Luftwaffe operations of WW2 and his books include German Fighter Units Over Russia, The Messerschmitt Bf 110 (with Holger Nauroth), and German Fighters in World War II – The Day Fighters & The Night Fighters (with Holger Nauroth), all published by Schiffer.

Ernst Obermaier is the author with Karl Ries of Luftwaffe Rudder Markings 1936-1945, also available from Schiffer.
